Hydrotherapy can produce a unique environment for exercise to which no other can compare. Our state of the art underwater treadmill combines the use of warm water and buoyancy to encourage ease of movement with little to no joint pressure. Thus, promoting increased joint range of motion, muscle strengthening through resistance, and heightened proprioception with repetition for neurological re-education. The warm water alone or with the adjustable pressure water jets can facilitate circulation, improve flexibility and encourage muscle relaxation. Massage, joint range of motion and muscle stretching may be more appropriate for certain patients while buoyancy is in affect. Treadmill treatments are personalized for each patient by adjusting the treadmill speed, water level height and time or distance. Swimming is also performed in the treadmill tank by raising the water level according to dogs size, adjusting the water jets and using a swim vest. Most importantly, our treadmill allows our patients to exercise at the appropriate level that is safe for their particular condition. We insure the safety and success of our treatment by always having a canine practitioner present inside the treadmill with our patient.

Each patient will require certain exercises relating to their specific injury and body type. Particular levels of exercise used will safely encourage strengthening, joint range of motion, muscle and ligament flexibility, propreioception and balance, endurance, agility and weight management. All exercises are demonstrated and taught to each client so they safely and efficiently perform these at home in a daily exercise program.
Cold therapy known as cryotherapy is used to manage the initial inflammatory phase of an injury or surgery. It is also commonly used after exercise to minimize any swelling. Cold therapy works because it aides in slowing down blood flow thus reducing swelling of tissues of the affected area allowing for increased mobility. It also can calm or slow down nerve conduction which in turn reduces spasms and the perception of pain.
Heat therapy is used after the initial inflammatory phases has ended, usually 72 hours after injury or surgery. Then it is safe to use heat to promote the blood flow which brings the bodies healing properties to the affected area. Like cold therapy it calms the nerve conduction softens tissue and allows for increased mobility. Heat therapy is usually used prior to exercise and massage.
